Phoenix Knock Off Valpo, Win Horizon League

For the first time in over 20 years, the Green Bay Phoenix are Horizon League champions in the regular season. That means that they will host the second round and the semi-finals of the Horizon League tournament. That all comes after they knocked off the back-to-back Horizon League champion, Valparaiso. The final score was 67-53, as Green Bay was lead by the man who this night was dedicated to, Senior Alec Brown, who had 14 points and eight blocks. Junior guard Keifer Sykes had 19 points and four assists.

After the game, I was able to talk to Coach Brian Wardle, Keifer Sykes, and Alec Brown. When answering what playing in front of the home crowd at least one more time meant to him, Alec Brown answered with, “It’s huge to bring the tournament here. Obviously a huge advantage playing at home.”

Coach Wardle was the same way, very focused. He said,  “This is one big step at our ultimate goal…Now we got to get back to work and continue to get better.” Lastly, but not least, Keifer Sykes said simply, “It’s special, it’s special for us.”

The Phoenix don’t play in the Horizon League tournament until the semi-finals, which are on March 8th. The Phoenix wrap up their final regular season games next Thursday at Oakland and close it out March 1st in Detroit.

FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT:

I unintentionally wrote a mini-article during the game on Twitter. Here you go:

Note: I did miss a made layup in that tweet, so those were 7-of-8 possesions.
